In early 2015, I was informed that a new National School Service School was planned for the Australian Capital Territory in response to the demand for more Indigenous and non-indigenous students.

At the time, the idea was to replace an existing school with one of the most comprehensive, high-quality institutions in the country. While the National School Service School would eventually be fully accredited, there would be minimal financial or service impact. The funding for the school's initial operations, which includes providing free and compulsory breakfast to all students in the school system, is being funded by the Government's own funding from the state.

The school will also include a unique learning system for Indigenous students, with dedicated resources including the Australian Indigenous Cultural Institute, school library, student services and more. A small number of Indigenous and non-indigenous students, based mainly at the high schools located close to the school will live there. This will add further diversity to the local educational system, which has become increasingly diverse in recent years. There will be no traditional schools, no traditional school children, and all students will be exposed to new ways of learning.

I have spent time at Indigenous school in Victoria, New South Wales and Tasmania, and I am currently working at the Australian National School of Law in Canberra. I am aware that Australia is not currently a leader in Indigenous education and the number of Indigenous children being enrolled at Australian universities and the mainstream primary and secondary education systems remains very low. This is because education for Indigenous peoples is dominated by "traditional education", which is not inclusive of Indigenous learners and does not address their needs.

It is important to remember that the school will not be just another high-quality institution, but it will be an innovative, comprehensive, comprehensive learning experience that will serve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children, and will build trust between both Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians.

To date, around $1 billion has been invested in education systems based on Indigenous peoples and will be reinvested in these systems.

Indigenous Australia needs to be a better place for Indigenous people to learn, work and live. And to get to that place, we must improve the quality of public education. That includes offering great, quality schools.
